In most of the states in India,untouchability,exploitation and suppression aginst Dalits exist despite laws banning them.Upper caste Hindus' sexual exploitation of Dalit women continues.It needs to be realised that Dalit women undergo double suppression-first by the males within their own community,and then under the patriarchal upper-caste domination.Their problems are not similar to those of the higher caste women.The myth that women are equal among themselves can no longer stand.That's why a parallel Dalit feminist movement has come into being.In the present scenerio of feminism within India,Dalit feminism is a strong force.

In order to raise the status of women in India, existing laws were amended and various new legislations were enacted. The Government accepted the principle of divorce by mutual consent and the Hindu Marriage Law was amended to that effect. Cruelty and desertion were added as grounds for divorce. Taking and giving of dowry were declared punishable. The Equal Remuneration Act 1979 provides for equal remuneration to men and women workers and prevention of discrimination against women in the matter of employment

It is unfortunate that,like many things in India today,the women's movement also has seen communalism getting into its arena.Hindu communal forces have been actively organising women.They are reviving the traditional stereotyped image of women-the Devi/Mata image.This is clearly a retrograde step which is not going to help women's struggle for equality.
Minority women are not inactive.Muslim women who face discrimination within their community have united and are organising struggles against male domination.Some Muslim women registered their protest against the Muslim Women Protectin Bill;which was actually for protection of the men against women.
Christian women's protest was connected largely to succession right.In 1986 in the Mary Roy case,the Supreme Court Passed a verdict favourable to proprty inheritance.This helped the Christian women's movement in principle.But many a hurdle still remains in practice.
